Bhima met Hidimba during the Pandava exile when they were trying to save themselves. Hidimba had a son named Ghatokha from Bhima. Barbarik is the son of Ghatokha. Barbarik replied that he would be on the losing side in the war when Shri Krishna asked. Shri Krishna knew the outcome and feared the Pandavas would suffer if he fought. 

Lord Krishna requested donations to stop Barbarik. He asked for the head as a charity. Barbarik donated the head to him, but he still expressed his wish to witness the war himself.

Shri Krishna granted the wish and put his head on the hill near the battle. Barbarik said that Shri Krishna was responsible for his victory. Shri Krishna was delighted with the sacrifice and granted him the blessing of being worshiped in Kaliyuga in the name of Shyam.

Khatu Shyam Ji Temple was originally built by Smt Narmada Kanwar and her husband, Shri Roop Chauhan. Diwan Abhaisingh, at the request of the king of Jodhpur in Samvat 1777 (around 1720 A.D.), renovated the old Temple. At this time, the Temple was given its current shape, and the idol was placed in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Before the Temple’s entrance gate, there is an open chowk. There is a large prayer hall measuring 40’6″ x 15’4″. The Temple of Gopinath Ji is located in the South-East.
