Who is Khatu Shyam Ji?

Baba Khatu Shyam has a Mahabharata connection. He was the grandson of Pandu Putra Bhima. According to the Hindu religion, Khatu Shyam Ji received a blessing from Shri Krishna that he would be worshiped as Shyam by Kaliyug. Barbarik Ji’s head is buried in Khatu Nagar, the present-day Sikar District of Rajasthan State.

The Story of Khatu Shyam Ji

Bhima met Hidimba during the Pandava exile when they were trying to save themselves. Hidimba had a son named Ghatokha from Bhima. Barbarik is the son of Ghatokha. Both were known for being brave and powerful. Barbarik decided to watch a battle between the Kauravas vs. the Pandavas. Barbarik replied that he would be on the losing side in the war when Shri Krishna asked. Shri Krishna knew the outcome and feared the Pandavas would suffer if he fought. 

Lord Krishna requested donations to stop Barbarik. He asked for the head as a charity. Barbarik donated the head to him, but he still expressed his wish to witness the war himself.

Shri Krishna granted the wish and put his head on the hill near the battle. Barbarik said that Shri Krishna was responsible for his victory. Shri Krishna was delighted with the sacrifice and granted him the blessing of being worshiped in Kaliyuga in the name of Shyam.

History of Khatu Shyam Ji Temple

Khatu Shyam Ji Temple was originally built by Smt Narmada Kanwar and her husband, Shri Roop Chauhan. Diwan Abhaisingh, at the request of the king of Jodhpur in Samvat 1777 (around 1720 A.D.), renovated the old Temple. At this time, the Temple was given its current shape, and the idol was placed in the Sanctum Sanctorum. Before the Temple’s entrance gate, there is an open chowk. There is a large prayer hall measuring 40’6″ x 15’4″. The Temple of Gopinath Ji is located in the South-East.

Khatu Shyam Mandir: Its importance

Lord Krishna gave the barbarik head to the Roopvati River at the war’s end. In Kaliyug in Phalgun month, Khatu Shyam Mandir is established after the dream and wonders of the Shyam Kund. The Khatu Baba, who was to be installed in the Temple on the 11th Shukla Masat day, was installed. Deewan Abhayasinh rebuild this Temple in 1720 AD, and its glow is still alive. Shyam Kund has been recognized both in India and abroad. The belief is that devotees can fulfill their wishes by bathing in this pool. This Temple is the most prestigious of Baba’s temples.

Khatu Shyam Mandir, made of white marble, is a true architectural marvel. The Temple is not only a favorite destination for devotees but also attracts many visitors who are amazed by the beautiful structure. The walls of the large prayer hall, Jagmohan, are decorated with elaborately painted scenes from mythology. The large hall (measuring 12.3 m by 4.7 m) is decorated with mythological scenes. The entrance and exit gates, made from marble with brackets with floral ornaments, are covered in a silver sheet. This adds to the Temple’s grandeur.

• Darshan will be available on Shukla Paksha Ekadashi (Sunday) and Dwadashi (Monday). These days, Darshan is available on the website and the YouTube channel.
• Darshan Timings can change during special occasions and festivals. Darshan Timings begin at 05.30 in the morning.
• Darshan is only permitted to a limited number of devotees to protect their safety and health.

You can take a taxi or a jeep from the railway station to get to the Temple. The nearest airport for those flying is Jaipur International Airport. The Temple is 95 kilometers away. You will need 4 to 5 hours to drive to Khatu Shyam Mandir from Delhi.
